Dentistry • Dental Exams: Comprehensive examinations of the oral cavity in combination with basic floating to remove unwanted points and hooks.
• Basic Dental Floating: An integral part of the yearly maintenance of all horses, from the juvenile to the geriatric equine. Cap and wolf tooth removal, point and hook removal on buckle and lingual surfaces, establishes proper oral health for juvenile equines. Proper occlusion, gingival health maintenance, and removal of diseased teeth, and diastema treatment keeps the geriatric equine in excellent oral health.
• Performance Floating: Installation of bit seats in combination with removal of excessive hooks and ramps and incisor work adds the finishing touch to give a performance horse the winning edge.
• Rostral and Caudal Hook Reduction: Reduction of large hooks and ramps in either the front or back of the oral cavity allow proper mastication and flexion of the head at the poll when under saddle.
• Bit Seat Installation: Rounding of the rostral edge of the second premolars (PM-2) prevents excessive pinching of gingival tissue between the bit and the tooth.
• Incisor and Canine Reduction and Incisor Alignment: Incisor reduction and alignment is beneficial for horses with abnormal oral conformation such as parrot mouth. Sometimes incisor reduction is needed after routine floating where a large amount of crown is removed.
• Molar and Premolar Extractions: Removal of an adult or deciduous tooth and roots due to trauma, disease, or old age. This lessens the chance of advanced gingival disease, osteomyelitis or sinus infection. |
