Equine Wellness Program

The Equine Wellness Program includes a comprehensive general health exam, as well as a thorough discussion between the veterinarian and the horse owner about the following veterinary and horse husbandry needs of each horse. At the end of the discussion, clients may opt for enrollment into the Phizer Preventicare Program.

Vaccination and Deworming: The protocol for both depends on age, immune status, environment, and exposure to disease.

• Farrier visits should incorporate a diagnosis and treatment of any lameness that exists in addition to trimming and shoeing requirements. Together, the veterinarian and farrier should make changes to help correct hoof problems that have occured due to use, existing conformation, and environment. It is important to establish a consistent shoeing period and relationship with your farrrier to help maintain your horses soundness.

• Nutrititional requirements will need to be developed for each individual in terms of roughage requirments, and mineral and concentrated supplementation. This will differ for the young horse, the competitive horse, maintainance for an idle adult horse, or for the sick or geriatric patient.

Dentistry needs for the individual will likely include an annual dental exam and float. This will also need to be tailored to the age, activity, diet and envirnoment for each horse. Many horses that require specialized dental care will need to be floated more frequently than once yearly.

• Colic : This part of the discussion will address what colic is, common causes of colic, how to recognize a colicky horse and what to do if you see a horse colicking.
